ReVIEW
Introduction
ReVIEW is a new service that aims to digitize many of the most important decorative and fine arts journals published in Europe and the USA during the nineteenth and early years twentieth centuries, making them available for the first time in a searchable form online. It will be a significant contribution to art history scholarship and could open up many new areas of research
The first two titles in the ReVIEW project are now available. These are:
THE STUDIO vols.1-50, 1893-1910
DEUTSCHE KUNST UND DEKORATION vols. 1-27 1897-1911
The STUDIO was one of the most respected and influential journals published in Britain. It was international in its coverage, and contained long, often well-illustrated articles on all aspects of the decorative, fine and applied arts. It included contributions from many of the leading art critics of the day, e.g. Aymer Vallance, Fernand Khnopff, A. lys Baldry, etc. In addition to long, well illustrated articles , each issue of THE STUDIO also contained a round-up of the latest art news, reports on recent exhibitions, and book reviews. THE STUDIO played an an important role in promoting trends and developments in contemporary art and was largely responsible for establishing the reputations, notable among whom were Aubrey Beardsley, James McNeill Whistler and the artists of the Glasgow School.
DEUTSCHE KUNST UND DEKORATION, sometimes known as 'the German Studio', was launched four years after its counterpart. It is similar in both size and format to THE STUDIO, and, like its predecessor, focused primarily on the work of contemporary artists. It also included book an exhibition reviews and news items. Although international in its coverage, DEUTSCHE KUNST UND DEKORATION, was biased towards German, Austrian and Central European art. It included extensive reports on the Exposition Universelle et Industrelle held in Paris in 1900, the Esposizione d'Arte Dekorativa Moderna held in Turin in 1902, and the work of the Wiener Werkstätte and the Deutsche Werkstätten.
